When Online Words Hurt

Whether we admit it or not, the vast majority of us humans have an inherent desire to be liked. Sure, we can put on a brave face but criticism and disapproval can be hard to swallow, particularly at a tender age.

As an adult, I still have clear memories of some rather unpleasant interactions I experienced often at the hands of ‘mean girls’ during my teen years. Harsh words, cruel taunts and general menacing behaviour. It was extraordinarily upsetting.

Fast forward to 2014 and harsh words still hurt. However this time they are not usually reserved for just a handful of kids in the playground. The online world has given the ‘mean boys and girls’ of this world a new forum. Harsh words shared between a few hundred or even thousand friends or followers is public, permanent and, without a doubt, very painful.

While I am pleased to report that I have developed a thicker skin since my teen years, I am not pleased to report that I have been on the receiving end of unkind online behaviour of late. And while it is much easier to rationalise and dismiss as an adult, it is unnecessary, destructive and downright cruel.
