Retailers asked to cover Sports Illustrated’s pornographic cover

PUBLIC STATEMENT FROM NATIONAL CENTER ON SEXUAL EXPLOITATION’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DAWN HAWKINS:

Sports Illustrated’s 2015 Swimsuit issue’s cover does not simply feature a beautiful woman in a bikini; it borders obscenity, as the focus is specifically on the exposed pubic area. The cover features model, Hannah Davis who, in a viral video of the cover reveal, said this is her “dream” and that the reveal was “the best day ever.” It is a sad day when a young lady believes she is at her best when sexually exploited and acting as a “porn star.”

This cover’s pornographic pose normalizes genital display, not just within the pages, but also on the front of the magazine. This will be at ground level display in most supermarkets, gas stations, bookstores, and airport kiosks for any 10-year-old child to see. The National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCSE) sent letters to many major retailers demanding that this magazine be removed from public display, particularly the checkout line, and be wrapped like any other pornographic magazine. NCSE is asking the public to help demand that companies like Wal-Mart, Kroger, Walgreens, Safeway, and Barnes & Noble remove the magazine from the eye-level of children and patrons who don’t …read more
