Deeply disturbing and unbelievable. There’s no other way to describe the idea of extreme Islamic terrorists using social media to recruit kids to join their violent cause.
According to a new report entitled Violent Extremism: The New Online Safety Discussion released by the Family Institute for Online Safety (FOSI), while the risks of children becoming radicalized online remains extremely low, the potential of children being exposed to extremist content is “a very real possibility.”
The report advises collaboration and continued education among government, community leaders, and social media companies in an effort to head off threats and keep families safe.
The FOSI report is timely considering growing news reports documenting wayward teens and twentysomethings being lured by extremists with the false promises of material items, wealth, and heroism.
Just a few of the stories include:
- Two well-educated American college students arrested at the airport while trying to join ISIS.
- A Philadelphia teen “misguided” by the ISIS movement was recently arrested after planning a terrorist attack possibly targeting Pope Francis.
- A Danish teen killed her mother after became obsessed with joining the Islamic movement.
